Despite the fact that San Joselooks to surpass San Francisco as one of the most productive and populous California cities, not as many Americans are as familiar with the intricacies of this locale as they are with the more storied Golden State cities. Of course, those who only know of the town from the hopelessly peppy Burt Bacharach / Dionne Warwick hit ("Do You Know The Way To San Jose") could be forgiven for having some odd preconceptions about it. San Jose essentially grew from a farming community to the 10th largest city in America in the span of a few decades, and now is home to nearly a million residents, many of whom helped to make San Jose the heart of microprocessor and technology industries known globally as Silicon Valley. With this industry in place and supported by a demographic makeup fairly unique to the U.S. (several hundred thousand East Asian residents call the city home), this plot of 180 square miles is well-positioned to remain a mainstay of high-tech international commerce.
The "Capital of Silicon Valley" has weather that's much more pleasant than its famous neighbor to the north, San Francisco, with an average of 300 sunny all year round and temperatures that hover around 45 to 80 degree F. It's also an incredibly diverse city, with substantial representation from the Latino, Asian and Anglo communities.
Then there's that industry called high-tech. San Jose leads the world in technological innovation. The most renowned tech companies such as Hewlett Packard, Google, Apple, and others are based in and around the San Jose metro area. The city also offers many cultural opportunities, fine art venues and sporting events that truly make it a major US city. If you love ethnic food, San Jose offers Mexican, Vietnamese, Filipino, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and other Latin American cuisines.
San Jose first began as a mission settlement for Spanish citizens coming from Mexico--in fact, it was the first civilian settlement in all of California. They began an agriculture-based economy that lasted well into the twentieth century. After World War II, industrial manufacturing took over and growth exploded for the remainder of the century, until tech came on the scene. While San Jose has seen much single-family home construction, 60% of the housing built since 1980 and over 75% of them since 2000 have been multi-family dwellings. With these smaller residences and increasing population, storage facility space is critical to residents who need it.
The cultural activity in San Jose is what might be expected of a city with a relatively high degree of education (some 37% of the residents hold at least a bachelor's degree). Venues like the San Jose Museum of Art testify to the modern, metropolitan, and yet historically aware nature of the town.
The festival events in the city are one-of-a-kind, particularly the Asian American Film Festival (shared between San Jose and San Franscisco) and the San Jose Jazz Festival. There is also no shortage of non-chain restaurants in the city, serving palettes accustomed to all types of global cuisine: affordably priced favorites include the Nordstrom Cafe Bistro, the famous falafel balls and banana milkshakes at Falafel's Drive-In, or the Mexican seafood offerings at Dia de Pesca. For big-league sporting life, the city is also well represented. The San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League are a very strong local draw, consistently competing in the Stanley Cup tournament (albeit perpetual 'bridesmaids' still awaiting their first Cup victory.) The local Major League Soccer team, the Earthquakes, does have at least a couple of championships to its name, and holds last season's 'Supporter's Shield' for best record in non-tournament play, making them a definite local attraction is Stateside popularity of soccer continues to grow.
With six community colleges and two universities, San Jose affords plenty of opportunities for education, career advancement and training. The largest of these institutions, San Jose State University, is located in the downtown area and has a student population of approximately of 31,000. Despite its reputation for being a commuter school, almost 9,000 students live on or around campus. The other major university, Santa Clara, is a private institution with 9,000 students and is situated to the west of downtown San Jose in its namesake city. Apartment complexes and multi-unit buildings surround both campuses and necessitate storage unit space, especially when students must move from one housing situation to another each year.
Neighborhoods in San Jose are wide-ranging. The more exclusive areas such as gentrified Willow Glen, Almaden and Evergreen neighborhoods have an average home price of $800,000 to $1 million. Others are more reasonably priced for either single-family or multi-family dwellings. These particular neighborhoods located south and east of downtown include Alum Rock, Berryessa and Edenvale. Homes here are priced in the mid-$400,000 to low $500,000 range and have many options for county parks and open space access. Perhaps it's not surprising to discover that many of the self-storage facilities in San Jose are located in this fast-growing area, as well as north of downtown near Mineta San Jose International airport.
5x5 storage units in San Jose cost an average of $40.25 a month, 5x10 units are $80.50, 7x10 units are $112.70, 10x10 units are $161.00, 10x15 units are $241.50, and 10x20 units are $322.00.
San Jose's price of $137.82 is more expensive than both California's average of $128.56 and the national average of $129.00
