Niagara Falls is a small city of 50,086 residents located in upstate New York along the Canadian border. The residents of Niagara Falls are a mixture of blue and white-collar workers, with a median household income of $31,452. The city is a very diverse city with a mixture of mainly white and African Americans, as well as Asians. The city and its residents have been really hit hard by the most recent recession, as well as that a number of industries shipped their jobs overseas. As a result, it is reported that 23% percent of the population lives below the poverty level and approximately 60% of the residents are on some sort of public assistance.
The main draw to the city of Niagara Falls is the Niagara Falls State Park, which is the home to the American side of the actual falls created by the Niagara River, which flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. The park has a number of attractions that entertain the approximately 10 million visitors each year. These attractions include the Cave of the Winds, Maid of the Mist, Prospect Point and the Aquarium of Niagara. Other nearby green space can be found in De Veaux Woods State Park, earl W. Brydges Artpark State Park and Fort Niagara State Park. Residents will find 25 local parks in the city including the massive Hyde Park, which is the second largest park in New York State, behind New York City's Central Park. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the Seneca Niagara Casino Hotel in the city, which is part of a redevelopment effort in the city. Residents that enjoy baseball will find two Class-A minor league teams here including the Niagara Falls Sox and the Niagara Falls Rapids. The weather in Niagara Falls can range from very cold to very hot and humid during the summer. Snowfall, as a result of "lake effect snow", can be significant as well. The city continues to pursue a number of economic initiatives to revitalize the local economy and allow the entire city to capitalize on the tourist traffic that the falls bring. The goal is to capitalize on the tourist traffic much like nearby Niagara Falls, Ontario has successfully done.
Fun fact: a barge named 'Old Scow' has been moored on a rocky outcrop near the brink of the falls since 1918.
Niagara Falls University and Niagara County Community College are the two colleges and universities in the city. Even though the city only has two schools here, their students are always looking for storage space to store their belongings during their summer beaks.
Niagara Falls provides extremely affordable housing options for its residents, even in the most desirable neighborhoods of Nashville, Lewiston Road, Pletchers Corners and La Salle. The median home value for homes in the city is a mere $66,566 and approximately 85% of the homes are valued under $102,000. The median rental price is $432 per month, so rentals are very affordable as well. Unlike other cities in the United States, there was not a big housing boom in Niagara Falls, so 99% of the homes were built before 1999. Many residents are in need of a storage facility to house such things as, recreational vehicles, excess furniture and other household items as many of these homes in Niagara Falls are smaller and lack enough storage space.
